What Is Hat Burning?

Hat burning is the process of creating decorative designs on hats using a heated tool. Also known as pyrography on hats, hat burning allows beginners and experienced artists alike to create custom western hats, baseball caps, and personalized gifts.

Traditionally, pyrography has been used on wood and leather. Today, many makers use the same basic idea to create custom burned hats, especially wide brim hats and baseball caps.

Why Do People Love Hat Burning?

Hat burning is popular because it turns an ordinary hat into something personal and unique. A design can be western, floral, rustic, boho, faith-based, patriotic, or completely custom to the person wearing it.

Some people burn hats for themselves. Others create personalized gifts for family and friends. Some makers even use hat burning designs to create finished hats they sell.

One of the best parts of hat burning is that you can start simple. You do not need to draw your own artwork from scratch. A traceable design gives you a starting point, which makes the process much less intimidating.

What Tools Do You Need For Hat Burning?

The most common tools used for hat burning are a soldering iron or a traditional wood burning tool. We prefer a tool with variable heat adjustment because it gives you more control while burning.

You will also need a hat, a printed design, carbon paper, and a pen or stylus to transfer the design onto the hat.

Not sure which hats work best? Read our guide on the best hat materials for beginners.

Before burning your first finished hat, we always recommend practicing on scrap material or an inexpensive hat. That gives you a chance to get comfortable with your tool, your temperature settings, and how the material reacts to heat.

How Do You Burn A Design Into A Hat?

Our process is simple and beginner-friendly.

Step 1: Choose And Print Your Design

Start with a design you like. Print the design and decide where you want it placed on the hat.

You can use the full design as-is, or you can cut apart different design elements and arrange them in your own way. This is one of the easiest ways to create a custom look without needing to draw anything yourself.

Many beginners like starting with a design bundle because it gives them several designs and elements to work with. You can browse our Hat Burning Bundles.

Step 2: Transfer The Design Onto The Hat

Once your design is arranged the way you want it, place carbon paper between the printed design and the hat. Then use a ballpoint pen or stylus to press the design onto the surface.

This gives you a clear pattern to follow when you begin burning.

Step 3: Burn The Design Into The Hat

After the design is transferred, use your heated tool to carefully burn over the lines.

Start slowly. Let the tool do the work. As you get more comfortable, you can experiment with shading, thicker lines, and torching to add depth and character to the design.

What Should Beginners Practice On?

If you have never burned a hat before, practice first. It is much better to make mistakes on practice material than on a hat you care about.

Option 1: Buy a sheet of stiffened felt or similar material from a craft or fabric store. Practice burning lines, curves, and small details until you feel comfortable with your tool.

Option 2: Buy an inexpensive hat or use an old hat you no longer wear. This helps you practice burning on the crown and brim of an actual hat.

Once you feel comfortable, you can move on to your finished hat project.

Can You Burn Baseball Caps Too?

Yes. Hat burning is not limited to wide brim hats. Many makers also enjoy burning designs onto baseball caps.

Baseball caps have a different shape, so the layout process is a little different. Smaller designs usually work best, especially when you are working on the front panel of the cap.

Can Beginners Really Learn Hat Burning?

Yes. Hat burning is very beginner-friendly when you start with the right design and take your time.

The biggest misconception is that you need to be an artist. You do not. A good traceable design gives you a pattern to follow. From there, your job is to transfer the design, burn the lines, and practice as you go.

If you are brand new, our Beginner Designs are a great place to begin.
