How To Transfer A Hat Burning Design

We get a lot of questions about how to transfer our designs to a hat. In the video below, there are three examples of transferring a design for wood burning. The techniques are applicable to transferring a hat burning design.

Before you watch the video, there are a few tips that will help you make a successful transfer:

1. Obviously, a hat is made of softer material than wood. It's best to practice on a piece of similar material as the hat. Most craft stores carry square pieces of felt that is perfect as your practice material.

2. Use a firm surface where you lay the hat.

3. If you are transferring the design to the hat crown, use some like a ball to create a firm surface inside the hat crown.

RESIZING NOTE: In the video resizing is done using Microsoft Word. You can resize our designs using Canva, Inkscape, Affinity Designer, CorelDraw, and many other graphic design software. We design in Inkscape, but our designs are compatible with other free or paid software.

Any of the methods shown in the video will work in transferring our hat burning designs to a hat. We prefer to use carbon paper. As you'll learn in the video, you can use graphite paper, but you'll have to be more careful because it smudges easier.

After watching the video, if you have any questions, please write us.

I had the same problems as Yvonne – May 2025. I have also just tried the transfer pen and tracing paper today with no luck. The hats are felt with a mix of polyester, I would love to buy your patterns but reluctant until I get the transferring right. Any suggestions please?

Hi Peggy. Great question. What I’d recommend first is using white tracing paper. I think most craft stores have it, or you can get it on Amazon. My second suggestion is to use either a white chalk pencil or a heat transfer pen. My first go to is the white tracing paper. Thanks for writing.

Hey Yvonne. You aren’t doing anything wrong. Sometimes the transfer paper is hard to remove. One trick is to burn small areas and remove the paper while it is still warm. Otherwise, use a sharp tool and pick the paper off as much as possible. Some people use packing tape to immediate remove small section as you work. I don’t know what you are using to burn, but it sounds like it’s too hot. If you are using a variable heat soldering iron (which we strongly recommend), you can turn down the heat, do a light burn, then remove the paper and go over the area again. I hope this helps.
